Matthew 16:24-26
Deny is defined as to refuse to agree or accede to; decline; reject; oppose; revoke; turn down.
As we follow Jesus, we start to look more and more like Him and as we look more like Him, we look less like the world. To deny yourself means to say “No” to yourself and “Yes” to God. The process of denial is to humbly submit our will to God.” It is to go through life repeating the words that Jesus said the night before He died. When He was praying in the garden, He said to God his Father, “Not my will but yours be done.” Are you willing today to deny yourself and follow Christ? When someone hurts us our natural instinct is to get mad and lash out on them but when you’re walking in discipleship it’s not our will but the Father’s will. So we must humble ourselves and realize that God is calling us to forgive even our enemies. Paul’s instructions to the church in Ephesus. “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Jesus taught that to be His disciple, His follower, the spiritual discipline of self-denial is required: Then Jesus told his disciples, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” Denying yourself is an essential part of the Christian life. Jesus called upon those who wish to be His followers to reject the natural human inclination toward selfishness. The Lord Himself exemplified self-denial. Self-denial is the willingness to deny oneself possessions or status, in order to grow in holiness and commitment to God. Denying yourself includes overcoming the persistent fleshly demands of the body, also known as the carnal self or the natural man and bringing them into submission to God’s Word so that you don’t give into sin.
I come by this morning to let you know denying yourself means seeking the good of others before looking out for yourself. Ruth is a perfect example. When Ruth followed Naomi, she practiced self-denial for the benefit of her mother-in-law. Also when Esther put her life at risk to save her people, she demonstrated self-denial. When you are willing to sacrifice your time, energy, rights, position, reputation, privileges, comforts, and even your very life for the sake of Christ, you exemplify what it means to deny yourself. Matthew 10:39 says; “Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” Be bless and I love you!!! JE
